Bulging and herniated spinal discs in the neck or lower back must be treated comprehensively with methods focusing on damaged, slipped, and torn discs. Slip discs are common, but the treatment you get for your slipped disc must not be through the common methods of neck and back care. The type of treatment you get must be exact and slip-disc-specific to recover fully.

The typical physiotherapy or chiropractic care provided by competing centers may not be suitable. Holistic non-surgical slip disc treatment in Shah Alam through NSD Therapy® protocols gives you the best chance of avoiding spinal injections for bulging, herniated, 0r extruded discs.

What Is A Slipped (Herniated) Disc?

chiropractic specialty center in kota kemuning

There are two categories of back pain and neck pain. The most common type is mechanical back pain, which accounts for more than 95% of spine problems. The second and less common type is non-mechanical pain.

Mechanical pain is usually affected by movements. postures, and activities. The pain is often worse first thing in the morning and when getting up and about. It may also be worse at the end of the day, especially after sitting for extended periods. One of the common reasons for mechanical neck pain and back pain is a Slip-Disc.

A slip-disc can occur in any part of your spine, from your neck to your lower back. The lower back is one of the more common areas for slip-discs mainly because the area absorbs the upper body’s weight and impacts our physical activities throughout the day.

Before we talk about our Slip-Disc Treatment In Shah Alam, let’s learn about the SPINE

The spine comprises a series of bones (vertebrae) stacked onto each other. There are seven cervical vertebrae in the neck (C1-C7), 12 thoracic vertebrae in the upper back (T1-T12), and five lumbar vertebrae in the lower back (L1-L5), followed by the sacrum and the tailbone (coccyx) at the base.

The bones in the spine surround and protect the spinal cord, which runs behind the vertebral bodies in a canal from the neck down to the top of the lumbar spine.

In between the vertebrae, the intervertebral disc serves as a shock absorber and helps facilitate spine movement, such as daily activities like walking, lifting, and twisting.

Each disc has two parts: a soft, gelatinous inner portion (nucleus pulposus) and a rigid outer ring (annulus fibrosus). These discs can degenerate over time because the elasticity and water content of the nucleus decreases with age. It can become a source of pain and degenerative disc disease.

Due to disc degeneration or trauma, the disc’s nucleus can protrude through the outer ring (annulus) and inflame a nearby nerve root, known as a slipped, herniated, or prolapsed disc. This is why older adults between 30 and 50 appear more vulnerable to slipped discs. Although it can happen to children, it is scarce.

If the slipped disc compresses one of your spinal nerves, you may experience numbness, pain, and discomfort along the affected nerve. If this pain radiates into the arm or leg, it is called radiculopathy, and leg symptoms may also be called sciatica.

How the Slip-Disc Treatment In Shah Alam gets to the Root Cause of A Slipped disc?

A slipped disc occurs when the disc’s outer ring becomes worn or torn, allowing the spinal disc’s inner portion to bulge or protrude. There are many risk factors for slip-discs, although they can strike even if you have no risk factors at all:

  • Certain motions may cause a slip-disc. A disc can slip out of place while twisting or turning to lift an object. Raising a large, heavy object can strain the lower back, resulting in a slipped disc.
  • Aging – Over time, wear and tear on the spine can lead to conditions (e.g., disc degeneration, spinal stenosis) that produce neck and the spinal disc is limited or interrupted. The most common cause of interruptions to the flow of nutrients is prolonged sitting or axial loading. Sitting for prolonged periods is the primary reason the intervertebral discs lose fluid (nutrients) and flexibility, which decreases a spinal disc’s ability to provide function during periods of activity and weight-bearing.
  • Occupational hazards – Jobs that require long hours of standing without a break or sitting in a chair do not support the back well. On the other hand, if you have a very physically demanding job that requires a lot of lifting, you also may be at increased risk for a slipped disc.
  • Sedentary lifestyle – Lack of regular exercise increases the chances of neck pain or back pain.
  • Weight gain – Being overweight, obese, or quickly gaining significant weight can put stress on the back and lead to back pain.
  • Genetics – There is evidence that certain types of spinal disorders have a genetic component. (e.g., Degenerative Disc Disease).
  • Mental health factors – Stress can affect the body in numerous ways, causing muscle tension.
  • Poor posture – Prolonged poor posture will, over time, substantially increase the risk of developing neck or back pain.

Diagnose and Slip-Disc Treatment In Shah Alam

The best chiropractors and physiotherapists in Shah Alam practice at CSC (Chiropractic Specialty Center®). CSC’s chiropractor will perform a history and physical examination to find the source of your pain and discomfort based on your complaints and symptoms.

This will involve completing a particular range of motion and orthopedic and neurology tests. A CSC chiropractor will check your muscle strength and whether you feel pain when moving or touching the affected area. They will be interested in when you first felt symptoms and what activities caused your pain to worsen.

Imaging tests can help our chiropractor view the bones and muscles of your spine and identify damaged areas. Examples of imaging scans include X-rays or MRI scans.

If MRI is recommended, the reason it is being recommended will be discussed with you, including the anticipated results and how the results may affect the management of your treatment.

If you previously have had an MRI or any imaging examination such as an x-ray or CT scan, please inform our chiropractor, who will likely want to review the study during your visit.

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. A magnetic field and radio waves create detailed images of the tissues within your spine. The examination is performed in a sizeable tube-shaped machine, where you lie inside and remain still for approximately 30-45 minutes.

The tube is a confined space. If you are claustrophobic, please discuss it with our clinical teams so that we can make the appropriate preparations for your MRI examinations. There is an option for an “open” MRI; however, the image quality is not as good.

MRI uses a strong magnetic field to create the images; therefore, the examination cannot be performed if you have metallic implants. Also, we encourage all patients to leave their jewelry at home, such as earrings and wedding bands, and to take out hearing aids before entering the MRI room. Additionally, those with artificial heart valves, heart defibrillators, metallic joint prostheses, or other metal objects avoid MRI assessments.

The main reason for ordering an MRI for patients with neck or back pain is to examine the anatomy of the spine. MRI can identify anatomical abnormalities of the intervertebral disc, such as bulges, protrusions, and herniations. MRI can detect vertebral bodies, endplates, spinal canals, spinal cord, and nerves. Nerve root compression can be seen on MRI.

The most common clinical reason for ordering MRI includes pain, paresthesia (pins & needles), numbness, or weakness in the arms or legs. These are symptoms of nerve root compression and are frequently caused by intervertebral disc protrusions or herniations, which can be seen on MRI. Isolated back or neck pain usually does not require an MRI; however, an MRI may be recommended if your problem has not improved with appropriate care. In some instances, the need for MRI is not clear. In such cases, a trial of conservative care may be recommended.

If your condition does not improve or gets worse, then an MRI examination can be ordered. Some patients want to know the precise extent of their problem: “How large is the disc herniation (3 millimeters, 6mm, 8mm, etc.), and is it L4-5 or L5-S1 or at multiple levels?” Since there are no adverse health effects of an MRI examination, aside from time and money, there is no downside to having an MRI examination performed.

Some MRI results perfectly match a patient’s symptoms and signs and help guide treatment. Other MRI findings are incidental, have no clinical significance, or are merely natural aging phenomena that are just as common in people with no symptoms or signs.

Sometimes MRI findings do not match a patient’s symptoms and signs. Inconsistency may be because MRI is performed with the patient in a supine and non-weight-bearing position. In contrast, symptoms are most often present when weight bearing while sitting, bending, lifting, or walking. MRI findings must always be considered and correlated with the patient’s symptoms and signs.

In our centers, treatment plans are constructed when the root cause of your complaint is identified. We may also recommend specific lifestyle changes or advice to manage pain, improve posture to help with healing, and reduce the possibility of future injuries. So, if you work with us, you will improve! Let our clinical experts assist your pursuit of an active life without pain or limitations.

Chiropractic Specialty Centers have successfully treated even the most difficult slip-disc conditions. Slip-Disc treatment in Shah Alam (Chiropractic Specialty Center®) is always focused on addressing the root cause of injury, not just the symptoms, which make us different from the rest.

Chiropractic Specialty Centers have the latest technology and equipment to deal with disc herniation (slip-disc) without spine surgery, injections, or medication. We are the only NSD Therapy® providers in Shah Alam. We have the first and only RxDecom® in Shah Alam. The RxDecom® is a state-of-the-art spinal decompression machine that treats slipped discs.

The RxDecom® gives a series of mechanical pulls to the problematic disc level in the lower back or neck without causing any pain. The strength and angle of the pull are patient-specific; our Chiropractor must input patient data on the computer connected to the RxDecom®, and the treatment is directed precisely to the particular condition.

Our Chiropractor will develop an individualized treatment plan that includes the RxDecom®, spinal manipulation, and flexion-distraction, which involves using a specialized table that gently stretches the spine. It will also include manual therapy, ultrasound, interferential current, and Russian stimulation modalities.

Most people can relieve slip-disc pain using an exercise program that stretches and strengthens the back and surrounding muscles. Our highly trained Physiotherapists will recommend exercises that can strengthen your back while reducing your pain.

While it may be tempting to refrain from all physical activity while experiencing the pain or discomfort of a slipped disc, this can lead to muscle weakness and joint stiffness. Instead, try to remain as active as possible through stretching or low-impact activities such as walking and swimming.

Most people with a slip-disc respond well to conservative treatment. Within a few sessions, pain and discomfort will gradually lessen. The total number of treatments needed for a slip-disc patient can vary. But, for the most part, you should be well into your recovery within a couple of months.

It may not be possible to prevent a slipped disc, but you can take steps to reduce your risk of developing a slipped disc. These measures include:

  • Use safe lifting techniques: Bend and lift from your knees, not your waist.
  • Always be aware and maintain good posture.
  • Be mindful of posture and time spent using electronic devices such as mobile phones.
  • Do not remain seated long; get up and stretch periodically.
  • Do exercises to strengthen your back, legs, and abdomen muscles.
  • Eat wisely and maintain a healthy weight.
  • Sleep on your back or side with proper support and not on your stomach
  • Invest in a good mattress, pillow, and chair
  • Have regular spinal check-ups
